Fitchburg to Hold Passing of the Key Ceremony
Recognizing Bank of America’s Generous Donation of 700 Main Street
FITCHBURG – August 7, 2017 – At a regularly scheduled City Council meeting held on July 18, 2017 the Fitchburg City Council voted unanimously to accept, as a gift, the Bank of America building located at 700 Main Street.
To recognize the donation, Mayor Stephen L. DiNatale will be hosting a Passing of the Key Ceremony on August 14th, 12:00pm at the 700 Main Street building. Attending the event will be Congresswoman Niki Tsongas, Representative Stephan Hay, Senator Jennifer Flanagan’s Office, City Councilors, City Officials, and Bank of America (BOA) officials. The general public is welcome to attend.
“The City of Fitchburg could not be more thankful to Bank of America for their partnership and donation,” said Mayor DiNatale. “I would also like to thank Bank of America Worcester Market President Ed Shea and the rest of the company’s local leadership for their civic-mindedness, philanthropy, and shared future vision of city hall. The beautiful 700 Main Street site represents a key component as we envision moving our municipal offices back to Main Street. Also, the proximity of the building to Fitchburg State University’s “Theater Block” makes today’s donation even more significant to the downtown.”
“Bank of America is delighted to have this opportunity to donate our building to the city and the people of Fitchburg,” said Ed Shea, BOA Worcester Market President. “This meaningful investment in Fitchburg’s future as a vibrant regional hub underscores our commitment to supporting the revitalization of this innovative Gateway City.”
In March of 2017, following the support of Mayor DiNatale, City Council approved a council order to hire an architectural firm, Lamoureux Pagano, to conduct a feasibility study of 718 Main Street. The feasibility study is slated to be finished and prepared for presentation before the City Council in September of this year. This comprehensive study will consider the existing building and site, including 700 Main Street, parking constraints, space programming, conceptual design options, and cost estimates.
